Why Charged

No build. No lock-in. No secrets.

Tools earn trust by respecting the people who use them. Documentation, defaults, and DX come before marketing.

No build steps
Charged UI ships pre-compiled: Lit 3 web components and Tailwind compiled in PHP. Composer require it and the modern workflow is just there. No Node, no toolchain, no runbook.
Modern DX, classic foundations
Drupal and WordPress already run the majority of the web. Charged gives them a contemporary workflow instead of trying to replace them.
Own your stack
No lock-in. You keep your own compute and your own code; the platform is a control plane, not a cage. Your data, your exit.
Open by default
Built in the open and contributed upstream. The base theme is GPL on Drupal.org, and the work proves itself.

FAQ

Asked. Answered.

Everything you need to know about the Charged ecosystem: the theme, the library, and the desktop app.

What is Charged, exactly?

Charged is an open-source ecosystem for WordPress and Drupal development: a free base theme (Charged UI), a premium component library (Charged Pro), and a local development desktop app (Charged Studio). Together they cover design, development, and deployment without the usual CMS friction.

Do I need Docker, Node, or any toolchain?

No. Charged UI ships pre-compiled. Install from a zip or Composer and start theming. Charged Studio bundles FrankenPHP, MariaDB, and Caddy, so a site is running in minutes with zero external dependencies.

Is Charged UI really free?

Yes. Charged UI is open source under the GPL and available on Drupal.org. Charged Pro (the premium component library) is a separate, paid product, but the base theme is and always will be free.

Which CMSs are supported?

WordPress and Drupal today. The components are framework-agnostic Lit web components, so they integrate cleanly with both classic and headless setups.

What platforms does Charged Studio run on?

macOS, Windows, and Linux. It’s a native desktop app (Electron) that runs each site on its own port with an isolated database. No port conflicts, no shared state between sites.

Can I use Charged UI with Layout Builder and Canvas?

Yes, that’s the core design goal. Components are SDC (Single Directory Components) and Canvas-ready, so editors compose production layouts in the CMS UI without touching templates.
